“I realized I over-processed my hair and it began to break. My Mom, Sister & Nieces were all natural so I decided to go ahead & join them and I love it” Brooke Harris, US
What’s your hair type(s) (if you know it) or how would you describe your hair?
I have 4C hair
When did you start your natural hair journey?
I started my natural hair journey in 2015.
How did you transition back to natural hair?
I grew it out and cut it!
What protective hairstyles did you use while transitioning to natural?
While transitioning to natural I would wear my hair in wigs and also braids and twists. I really didn’t have a go-to, I liked to change it up.
What were your go-to products during your transition?
My go-to products were great deep conditioners. There is a lot of stress on the hair, so you want to protect it. Moisturized hair equals healthy hair.
What mistakes did you make along the way?
Along the way I made the mistake of getting protective styles that didn’t protect my edges. Once I was fully natural, I then had to grow my edges back.
How did your family react to your natural hair journey?
I actually surprised my family, I was the last one. They were only surprised because I proclaimed I would never go natural. That’s definitely changed!
If you relaxed your hair, did you ever go back to “the creamy crack”?
I have not!
What’s your current hair regimen?
Currently I am protective styling for an entire year. I wear a style 4-8 weeks, take it out & wash & deep condition, then let it breathe for a week.
What’s your morning & night time routine?
In the mornings I spray my hair with a water/conditioner/oil mixture to refresh the hair and the style I am wearing it in. When my hair is out of the protective style, I usually just unwrap it from my scarf or bonnet and go or take out my twists from a twist out and go. At nights I wrap my hair with a scarf and/or bonnet. If my hair is not in a protective style, I usually moisturize and seal my ends.
What are your favorite hair products now?
Right now I really like TGIN, MIELLE Organics, and Shine ‘n Jam.
What are your favorite hairstyles?
My fav hairstyles are a twist-out, a curly mohawk and flexi rod sets.
Do you want to give a shout out to your hairstylist?
I am my hairstylist 🙂
What advice would you give to naturalistas out there?
The advice I would give naturalistas is to love their crown, no matter what type of crown they have! Get creative with it & always keep it moisturized
