Styling Tips Based on Hair Types

by | May 25, 2021 | Natural Hair Styles

Thinking about rocking your natural hair out more often? That’s great! It’s time we start normalizing kinky, coily, and curly hairstyles on every occasion. The next step is determining the best hairstyle to wear. While you may fall in love with the perfect ‘do, it may not be an ideal option for your hair length, texture, and type. In this article, we’ll walk you through a few styling tips to help you choose the best one!

1. Identify Your Hair Type

Adding to our list of things every curly girl should know, understanding your hair type is essential. In the Black community, most of our curls and coils fall under the type 3 and type 4 hair categories. Next, the pattern and density of your hair strands are subcategorized. Check out the chart below for a helpful visual:

From there, you’ll have a better idea of hairstyles to consider and whether or not you’ll need to manipulate your texture to fit the look.

2. Seek Inspiration Based on that Hair Type

The next step is to draw inspiration from hair models with the same or similar hair type. While professional hairstylists are amazing, they’re not magicians. You’ll want to have realistic expectations so that your stylist doesn’t have to apply excessive heat and treatments that can potentially damage your hair. You can even create a mood board of various styles to try based on the particular event. Here’s a great example of a natural hairstyle mood board from Zola

3. Consider the Season and Environment

When deciding on the perfect natural hairstyle, take into consideration the time of year and environment. Is the event or occasion you’re attending outdoors? Factors such as humidity, sun, and wind can all play a role in how long your hairstyle will last. Fortunately, the right product and hair accessory can make all the difference in helping maintain the style and preventing frizz!

4. Book a Professional Natural Hair Stylist

Last but not least, make sure you have a professional hair stylist that specializes in natural hair, especially curls and coils. They can provide expert advice on hair care and suggest a style that works best for you. If you need help in your search, look no further!
